Weizhuang restaurant renovation is located at West Lake, Hangzhou, facing the entrance of Huagang Guanyu. The design addresses “how to leverage tourist flow” and “how to attract visitors during non-meal hours,” proposing the theme of “seeing and being seen” — making the restaurant both a place to view scenery and a scenery to be viewed. It also extracts the spatial logic of “eave, corridor, courtyard” from Song paintings to restructure circulation, shifting dining from “seated” to “strolling,” creating a restaurant where time can be slowly enjoyed.

The design extends the gray space under eaves to form a continuous walking path, replacing traditional immediate seating. Outdoor eave space is introduced, with heaters in winter for comfort. Seated here, one can gaze at West Lake (seeing), while the transparent eave makes the space a subject for park visitors’ cameras (being seen) — fully activating the site’s potential. Circulation shifts from “seating” to “walking,” reorganizing the dining experience and guiding people to pause, observe, and interact while strolling.

The facade is inspired by Song Dynasty architecture, with dark gray metal outlining layered flying eaves and incorporating lattice window patterns. The building becomes a visual focus on the lakeside, inviting passersby to stop and view. Meanwhile, sightlines extend outward from inside, completing the bidirectional narrative of “seeing and being seen.” Opposite Huagang Guanyu, a Song-style openable pastry shop features three wooden window panels that lift fully upward, creating a dynamic facade: passersby watch the bustle inside, while seated guests watch street life — “seeing and being seen” flows naturally through opening and closing.

Seating is divided by partition walls, onto which Song-style lattice window patterns are translated. Sightlines pass through the lattice, making the space more open — guests see neighboring figures in soft focus while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Interior and exterior views interweave, echoing the theme throughout. The restaurant’s beautiful surroundings bring natural scenery indoors through window framing, making the landscape the backdrop for dining.

Dark gray metal outlines the eaves, while wooden window panels and lattice windows echo Song aesthetics. The overall palette is calm and elegant. Extended gray space under eaves creates light-and-shadow paths, producing a relaxed place for both distant viewing and close wandering.

We aim not merely for a restaurant, but a “station within scenery” where one can stroll, pause, and engage in bidirectional viewing — weaving dining behavior with West Lake’s landscape and visitors’ gazes into an ongoing dialogue, activating the site’s non-meal hour vitality.
